Ode to Ursus arctos horribilis by *omigodimonfire:iconomigodimonfire:

How can anyone,
in the science of an instant,
see & hear & smell & taste & feel
as much as you do?

How can anyone,
in the space of a moment,
understand the knot of emotions & personal language
that makes you who you are?

We must be reminded
not to weep and tremble
in fear at your finger-length claws
but in awe and respect
at the prints left by your huge paws.

“To fight” & “not to fight”
are not things you are concerned with-
instead, you center yourself around how
“to eat” & “to play” & “to live” & “to be free.”

But there is more than that, I realize;
there are the subtleties
of your strength of spirit,
as prominent as your grace,
and this awareness is as ingrained in our being
as any basic instinct.

I wrote this for an English assignment, and here is my reflection:

My ode is titled, “Ode to Ursus arctos horribilis,” which is Latin and the scientific name for the Grizzly Bear. I chose to write to the Grizzly Bear because I have always been taken with the bear’s physical prowess, how they can “see & hear & smell & taste & feel” a great deal and so much better than we can, and with their immense personality, their “strength of spirit.” The overlying and most important themes in my ode were “the prints left by [their] huge paws” and the “awareness [that] is as ingrained in our being as any basic instinct.” By including that Grizzly Bear paws leave huge prints, I was trying to symbolize how important they are to the environments that they live in. Unfortunately there are much fewer Grizzly Bears in the wild today and they have so little land left, but they still are a significant animal to the ecosystems they inhabit, regardless of what some people might think, or not think, of them. The mention of the “awareness” that we all possess of their subtleties was meant to indicate how we might not feel the presence of the bears now, but with them gone there would certainly be a loss of something, perhaps even a loss of the soul of the wild. It is because Grizzly Bears, the soul of the wild, deserve to be celebrated and their integrity preserved that I wrote this ode.

What's hell without a little fire? [insert flamethrower] :onfire:
... I'm pretty sure fire extinguishers can't heal second degree burns...
'Almost' only counts with grenades and horseshoes.
